6 reasons to try a multi-day event
Maybe you’ve done a few fifty-milers and you’re looking for something a bit different? Perhaps you want to explore a new area but are put off by the logistics?
Whatever your running background, a multi-day event like the Cape Wrath Ultra is definitely one for the running bucket list!
Multi-day races or stage races allow you to relax at camp at the end of each day. Here are 6 reasons why you should try a multi-day event:
1. The camaraderie is unlike anything else
The best thing about a multi-day event is the camaraderie! Unlike a continuous race, where you will likely only encounter the people running at a similar speed to you, the overnight camps give you the time to really get to know the other participants across the entire field.
Whether you’re at the back of the pack or a frontrunner, the communal marquee is the perfect place to connect with other runners and share stories and knowledge. The lifelong friendships and bonds that form amongst the runners is without a doubt the best part of a multi-day event.
2. The camp experience
A multi-day event is about so much more than just the running. It’s also about the experience at the overnight camp.
With the route being so remote, the Cape Wrath Ultra gives you the opportunity to stay in some of the most stunning locations in Scotland, that you wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to visit.
Relax and refuel in the shadow of the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, or soak up the glorious views next to Kinloch Hourn after a day of journeying through the remote Knoydart peninsula.
The time spent at camp, whether in the communal marquee is an integral part of the experience.
3. You can treat the experience like an adventure holiday
Holiday may seem an odd way to describe something that is obviously very challenging. However, the great thing about the Cape Wrath Ultra being a multi-day stage race is that you can really enjoy being immersed in the experience.
The Cape Wrath Ultra gives you the rare opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful routes in the country without having to worry about the logistics of arranging accommodation in remote areas or having to carry your tent.
You can instead simply enjoy the journey in the knowledge that there’s a tent already ready and waiting for you and a hot meal at the end of the day.
4. It’s a different kind of challenge!
In a continuous race, the main challenge is continuing to put one foot in front of the other. However, on a multi-day race it’s also about how well you look after yourself in camp.
Camp admin and making sure you are sufficiently fuelled are all a part of the challenge. Those who succeed in multi-day races aren’t necessarily the best runners – they are the people who recover and make sure they look after themselves!
5. You have time to recover
Many ultra-runners will be familiar with the zombie shuffle at the end of a long continuous race. Fortunately, multi-day races give you time to recover between each stage, so you can get some sleep and fill your boots with the delicious event food.
Plus, you won’t suffer from the sleep-deprivation hallucinations that sometimes plague runners on continuous races. Instead, each day is a new day and an adventure!
6. You become part of the community
The Cape Wrath Ultra community is really like no other. It’s wonderful seeing the runners and event team band together as they support each other through their epic journey. For eight days, you become completely a part of the event bubble. You may arrive on the start line not knowing anyone, but by the end of the 8 days, you are part of a family!
